Crowds of people celebrated Christmas in and around Prague’s Na Kampě Square

Prague – Crowds of people arrived at the Christmas meeting in Prague’s Na Kampě square and the surrounding area around noon in warm weather, occupying all the available benches. Neighbors and acquaintances spread Christmas cookies and bottles of wine on them. A large group of people sang carols accompanied by a guitar. they took advantage of the stalls with various types of refreshments and did not bother with the tradition of fasting on Christmas Eve. The Municipal District of Prague 1 with the Association of Citizens and Friends of Malá Strana and Hradčany and the Association of the New Town of Prague organized a Christmas soup-pouring at Kampa.
“We have invited both our neighbors, people who live along the banks of the Vltava river, and of course both visitors to Prague 1 and the center of the capital city. 250 liters of fish soup are prepared at Kampa, in addition to that, we will also distribute soup in the upper part of Wenceslas Square from 1:00 p.m. náměstí and in between, Prague 1 and its social services center are organizing a lunch for lonely seniors at noon,” Prague 1 spokesman Petr Bidlo told ČTK. “The last time we gave out soups was in 2019, then we had a covid break, so today it’s kind of a renewal of the local tradition,” he added.
Due to the pleasant weather, crowds of people of all generations, local residents and tourists, proudly come to the park in Kampa. “We didn’t have time to organize the company Christmas party, so my colleagues and I will make up for it here,” said a young man from a group celebrating by one of the benches in the park, filled with boxes of candy and bottles of sparkling wine.
Similar to Prague 1, homeless people were also treated in other places in the metropolis. For example, clients of the Salvation Army in the low-threshold day center of Bohuslav Bureš Social Services in Prague 7 will receive Christmas lunch today. In the Asylum House of St. Terezia is preparing a Christmas Eve dinner for people without shelter, Archdiocesan charity Prague. According to the media representative of the charity, Jarmila Lomozová, they expect to entertain 200 people. In many places throughout the Czech Republic, the tradition of Christmas Eve meal has returned after a two-year break due to the coronavirus.
Already on Friday, December 23, the serving mayor of Prague, Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates), poured fish soup on the Old Town Square. Charity events continue on Sundays as well. In Prague, Prague Archbishop Jan Graubner will attend a traditional Christmas lunch for people who find themselves on the margins of society in the Archbishop’s Palace.
