After a revoked tender and eight deserted journeys, the main works of the TAV between Verona and Vicenza were finally entrusted, the first functional lot of the high-speed railway line which will then continue up to Padua. And in the meantime Rfi (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, a company of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group) has published in the Official Journal of the European Union the tender for the executive design and construction of the works of the Verona Junction – West Entrance, also an integrated part of the table
The tender called by Rfi has a value of 253 million euro. Money that is used to design and build the functional works at the entrance to the Brescia-Verona high-speed train in the Verona Porta Nuova station. Works that consist of 3.6 kilometers of new railway line and a new route, approximately 3.3 kilometers long, dedicated to freight trains. The project also includes rationalization and upgrading of the Verona Porta Nuova station with modification and expansion of existing tracks, sidewalks and underpasses.
The project will make it possible to reduce interference between the various traffic flows, making circulation more fluid and increasing capacity in the railway junctions of Brescia and Verona, with benefits on the regularity and punctuality of both long-distance and regional services. It will also increase the efficiency and consistency of freight transport and the new freight line will make it possible to partially free the Verona hub from flows to and from the Brenner line and will enhance connections with the Quadrante Europa freight yard.
For the completion of the work, Vincenzo Macello, deputy general manager of Rfi, was appointed as extraordinary commissioner. The interventions constitute a first phase of the overall reorganization project of the Verona railway junction and form part of the completion of the Milan-Venice railway axis.
Railway axis under construction between Brescia and Verona, but also between Verona and Vicenza and the residents of the eastern part of the capital who are forced to live with major traffic changes caused by construction sites. But the good news is that by now the bulk of the work on the so-called “Verona-Vicenza crossroads” functional lot has been entrusted and awarded. In fact, the increase in the cost of raw materials had made the tenders called by Iricav Due, the consortium of companies responsible for building the Verona-Padua high-speed train less attractive. Some tenders had therefore gone deserted, causing slowdowns in the work schedule. Recently, however, Iricav Due announced the awarding of all the more substantial works. Works that cost more than 750 million euros. The only tenders not yet awarded are those for the high-speed rail system and anti-noise barriers, while a construction site in the Vicenza area, between Montebello and Montecchio Maggiore, has to be planned. Therefore, for those works, it is not yet possible to launch the tender. But all the other tenders have been awarded and this means that after the works in East Verona, those to build the rest of the track in the Verona area have also started. Track expected to be completed between July and November 2024.
