LThe medical response plan was released on Sunday evening in West Flanders due to freezing rain which made the roads in the province very slippery, leading to numerous accidents and the stoppage of public transport traffic.
One person lost his life because of the traffic conditions.
Emergency services are overwhelmed with calls and there are not enough ambulances to help everyone. “Red Cross ambulances are called in as reinforcements,” said the governor of the province, Carl Decaluwé.
“It is also difficult for the rescuers to reach certain places because the road is too slippery. If you don’t have to be outside, stay home. It’s really too dangerous on the road,” he added.
Almost the entire country is placed on orange alert by the MRI. Only the province of Luxembourg is on yellow alert.
