The ice in Prague on water bodies is very thin and dangerous
Thanks to the low temperatures, the levels of Prague’s reservoirs and ponds have become covered with a layer of ice and are inviting for skating. However, the ice on them is not yet safe enough, warns Lesy hl. of the city of Prague, which manages Prague’s waterways and reservoirs.
“For our purposes, during regular inspections of technical objects of water bodies, we also measure the thickness of the ice on water bodies of the second and third category, which is the Hostivařská dam, Džbán, Šeberák and Jiviny. We also measure randomly at other locations, for example at Počernické pond, Kyjské pond, Pískovná and other water bodies. “Despite the freezing weather of the last few days, we found the thickness of the ice to be only a few centimeters for the time being,” the report states.
“Please note that experts indicate a minimum safe ice thickness of up to 15 cm for individual skating, and even up to 18 cm for group skating,” the company said.
Skating enthusiasts always enter frozen natural bodies of water at their own risk and must take into account that the thickness of the ice here is variable and very thin at the inflow and outflow points.
“We appeal to everyone who wants to skate or just shorten their journey across a frozen pond: Always check the ice condition, do not enter the inflows and outflows from the water works, pay attention to cracks and holes and do not enter the ice surfaces if you are not sure their safe thickness. Entering an unknown area is tantamount to gambling with life,” adds the message.
