no to the International Criminal Court
In our country there are at least 8,000 veterans seriously ill from exposure to various heavy metals such as depleted uranium, while four hundred have died. All of them have returned from theaters of war where the bombings carried out by NATO have caused a “cancer pandemic”, or have returned from service at Alliance firing ranges such as Capo Teulada or Quirra in Sardinia.
Even in front of these numbers the president of the European Council Ursula von der Leyen it will not ask for the establishment of an international criminal court. Yet it is a fact that NATO has used over 300 tons of depleted uranium munitions in its illegal wars and in Italian shooting ranges as well.
The journalist Gregory Picciniin an article published on ‘They left‘ he explained that “Italian institutions, both military and non-military, have always denied the causal coherence between exposure to heavy metal and the onset of serious tumors among soldiers. This denial of truth and justice also applies, implicitly, to thousands of civilians who continue to live, fall ill and die in the territories contaminated by the bombing”.
This silent massacre will now be brought to the attention of the EU Parliament by the Party of the European Left (The Left) which closed its congress in Vienna on 11 December 2022.
‘War crimes are not time-barred’, reads the conclusions of the motion presented to the congress by the Communist Refoundation Party and approved by 90% of the delegates of the red-green European parties. ‘The Party of the European Left undertakes to bring the issue of civilian and military victims of depleted uranium to the attention of the European Parliament and to identify a path which can commit Parliament to the path of truth and justice for all victims and for the banning of these weapons inside and outside the perimeter of the European Union.
We recall that Italian institutions have always denied the causal coherence between “exposure to heavy metal and the onset of serious tumors among soldiers. This denial of truth and justice also applies, implicitly, to the thousands of civilians who continue to live, fall ill and die in the territories contaminated by bombing”.
“There are in fact over three hundred – we read on ‘They left‘ – the lawsuits for damages won by the victims of depleted uranium against the Ministry of Defense which, in addition to keeping the rubber wall up, continues to spend huge public resources to try to demonstrate its inadmissible ‘extraneousness to the facts’, i.e. having sent overwhelm their own personnel”.
“The lawyer Angelo Fiore Tartaglia, legal representative of the victims, in twenty years of battles for truth and justice has managed to build a jurisprudence that has established the causal link between exposure to heavy metal and the onset of serious tumor pathologies while the Ministry of Defense has come to lose even at the highest levels of Italian justice”.
The link was also demonstrated by the “judgment issued by the second section of the Council of State published on 9 August 2021 where the judges of the Court” rejected “the appeal of the ministry (of the defense ed) against a previous unfavorable sentence of the Tar and the sentenced to recognize to an army corporal the benefits provided for the victims of duty. The former soldier had in fact contracted Hodgkin’s lymphoma after having carried out, in Italy, cleaning and maintenance operations on military vehicles returning from operational theaters in the Balkans”.
This silent massacre caused by NATO’s depleted uranium has been defined as “state”. A massacre now part of the already sadly long list of unpunished deaths.
