35,000 spectators – world record in Hanover at the Open Air
Reading time: approx. 3 minutes
The following Hamburger, Tilburger and Hallenser won their encounters, while the Indians will leave the weekend with zero points and will be stuck in fifth place for the time being. In a direct duel for sixth place, Herne prevailed against Leipzig and Hamm is slowly but surely approaching the Icefighters.
Hanover Scorpions – Hanover Indians 5: 2 (2: 0, 1: 2, 2: 0)
A new world record was set in Hanover on December 17, 2022. The 35,000 spectators worldwide have never attended the third-rate ice hockey game and these fans were treated to a great deal, with the entire event lasting almost seven hours. Seven hours to almost minus temperatures, so a change was needed, and the organizer Hannover Concerts had taken care of that. The start was dedicated to the youth teams from Hanover, Stuttgart and Bad Tölz. Then there was something for the ears, true to the motto “Music meets Ice Hockey”, namely by Culcha Candela. A celebrity game provided the next sporting highlight. The Per Mertesacker Foundation met the Kinderherz association. The fact that the team of ex-national player Mertesacker won 4:3 is only important for the annals. Then two courageous young athletes competed to show off their figure skating skills, including the 17-year-old Lower Saxony state champion Juliane Haselbacher.
After a pyro show, the game of the year finally began in front of 35,000 spectators, including fans from Berlin, Hamm, Hamburg, Memmingen, Stuttgart, Iserlohn, Braunlage, Salzgitter, Kassel and Frankfurt. This got to see a somewhat hectic party at first. That was no wonder either, because which of the participating players played in front of their own backdrop and then also in an open-air stadium. After ten minutes of careful scanning, the Indians then played a little more courageously, but are still far too reserved. Maybe to avoid penalties, because the Scorpions already had more of the game at this point because they seem stronger in terms of running and playing. And then happens those 120 seconds that must not happen to an opponent of the Scorpions. First there was a hair-raising bad pass and two minutes later the Indians had the puck blown off in a manpower game and after Ralf Rinke had made it 1-0, Robin Just scored to make it 2-0. The shock was there and the guests saved themselves in the first break. Shortly after the start of the game, Christoph Koziol scored the 3-0 after a perfect pass from Raabe, and the guests were in for trouble. But they were lucky because the Scorpions, who had been coldly taking their chances up until then, seemed about to switch to administration mode.
They let the Indians into the game more and they thanked them with two nice goals, scored by Jayden Schubert and Robin Palka. Now there was a good mood again in the wide circle, especially the guest block, which was placed behind Scorpions keeper Brett Jaeger at both goals, could now be heard well. As a result, there was a game to see, whereby you slowly noticed the loss of strength of the guests, who had to play a very difficult game against Halle the day before. The preliminary decision came in the 52nd minute when Pascal Aquin deflected a shot from McPherson with a bit of luck and defeated Indians goalkeeper Jan Dalgic, who had replaced David Böttcher-Miserotti in the middle of the game. After that, the Indians threw everything forward, but could hardly create any real chances and conceded the fifth goal a few seconds before the end of the game through an empty netter from Brandon Alderson. This was the 13th loss in a row for the Indians against the Scorpions perfect.
