Explosion of joy in Lyon. After the 2-0 win for France against Morocco this Wednesday, December 14, 2022 during the semi-finals of the World Cup, hundreds of supporters gathered under the sound of firecrackers and fireworks at Place Bellecour in Lyons.
The evening was quickly marked by excesses and clasheswhile the gendarmes responded to the throwing of projectiles with teargas. For the supporters, the party was ruined this Wednesday evening in Lyon.
Of four arrests in total, two ultra-right individuals were arrested according to the Rhône prefecture in Lyon news.
Fireworks in Lyon
While the city center was cordoned off by the police since 8 p.m.Les Bleus supporters used their firecrackers and fireworks following France’s qualification against Morocco for the 2022 World Cup final.
The bars emptied in Lyon once the final whistle was held. Songs of supporters and jubilant Lyonnais stormed Place Bellecour to celebrate the victory of the Blues in the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup.
Clashes at Place Bellecour
From 10:42 p.m., the first tensions erupted in Lyon’s most famous square where the police used tear gas to evacuate a jubilant crowd. Public transport has been heavily impacted.
Police were trying to clear the crowd to prevent members of the ultra-right to attack passers-by of North African origin in Place Bellecour where clashes between groups took place.
The crowd was massed in front of a cordon of mobile gendarmes between Place Bellecour and the Hôtel-Dieu, before being dispersed on the adjacent streets.
Shortly before 11 p.m., Place Bellecour was thus totally evacuated due to a brawl between groups which required the intervention of the police.
Projectiles and broken glass qualified on the floor on the sidelines of the victory of the Blues. The throwing of firecrackers multiplied at 11:08 p.m. on the gendarmes, who again replied with tear gas.
Fire to deplore
Around 11:10 p.m., from lights bins were reported on Place Bellecour.
The atmosphere was tense and violent as France celebrated their qualification for the final against Argentina on Wednesday evening. The involvement of the ultra-right is carried out by the Rhône prefecture.
The Guillotière bridge, closed to let a police procession pass, then prevented a young man who lived near the metro from Guillotiere to return home from Bellecour.

At 11:30 p.m., the situation continued to degenerate in Place Bellecour where the crowd movements were taking place.
At least four arrests
It was the turn of rue Victor-Hugo, south of Place Bellecour, to be the scene of clashes. For the supporters, the party was wasted this Wednesday evening in Lyon, while the CRS cordoned off each room in Place Bellecour, finally evacuated around midnight.
The Rhône prefecture informs Lyon news that two ultra-right individuals were arrested, for 4 arrests in total. Tensions moved to Rue-du-Président-Édouard-Herriot around midnight.
After midnight, calm returned to downtown Lyon, where waste and damage had disappeared. Traffic on the impacted TCL bus lines then gradually resumed.
