We will limit transit through Prague 1. Only companies with an establishment and headquarters will park, the local mayor plans | iRADIO
A suburb-type roundabout does not belong in front of Prašná brána, I think the mayor of Prague 1, Terezia Radoměřská (TOP 09). We consider the problem of our district to be outside of other transport, so he wants to limit transit. For example, he is considering reducing the speed on the embankment or in Karmelitská Street. He also plans to take parking cards away from shell companies based in the city center. She said this in an interview with Rádio DAB Praha.

What do you think is Prague One’s biggest problem?
It would be easier to ask what the least problem is. There are a number of big problems and they are interconnected. Whether it is very extensive tourism. Whether it is transport, especially transit, that passes through the city. Airbnb, alcotourism, noise, dustiness. Basically all the evils that concern the center of a big city.
What is your plan to get transit from downtown?
The district has relatively little influence on it, as it falls under the jurisdiction of the capital. But we will negotiate with the capital so that, above all, and that is the alpha and omega of urban transport, the city ring road will finally be completed.
We will also try to create pressure on the capital city with the surrounding districts so that bypass routes of the city center, not only Prague 1, but also Prague 2, parts of Prague 5, and so on, are put into operation as quickly as possible. But there has to be a debate with the surrounding districts.
The extension of parking to the sidewalk in Prague’s Nerudová Street did not help. Tourists park here, residents complain

I would not like us to make a similar mistake, as it often happens, that we will only look at our own backyard, and we are not interested in what is behind the fence.
How do you want to figure it out?
In principle, transit traffic would have nothing to do within the city. We can limit it in such a way that we limit parking inside the city, that we limit the speed, people already drive there, and so on.
These are restrictive instruments that, to put it badly, complicate the lives of those who drive across the capital.
You talk about reducing speed, but as I know Prague 1, there is nowhere to drive fast. How exactly did you come up with it?
First, I’m leaving it to the experts because I’m not a transportation expert. But of course the possibilities are given by the fact that, for example, we can reduce the speed to 30 kilometers per hour in areas where they still drive relatively fast. And it’s the transit routes.
Of course, it is not Karlova Street or Prokopská na Malá Strana or similar. But it is, for example, Karmelitská Street, which is quite busy. Or is it the waterfront. It would be possible there. We suppose it could be a success. But as I say, it’s not decided yet.
Parking for locals only
Regarding parking, you have already said that you want to reduce the number of parking permits for companies in Prague 1. By what percentage do you plan to issue fewer permits next year?
I don’t really like the answer to the question about parking. Of course, we want to keep the residence cards in the size they are, because those who live have the right to park, of course. And I insist on that.
Prague 1
The coalition consists of ODS, Pirates, TOP 09, ANO and Residents 1. Among the 27 representatives, they have a majority of 16 votes.
Praha 1 Sobě won the municipal elections in Prague 1, winning seven mandates. The ODS finished second with five mandates and the Pirates third with four.
The Pirates spoke out against membership in this coalition at the national forum, but three of the four Pirates decided to continue in the coalition.
The coalition We, who live here, also got into the council with four mandates, ANO has three representatives in fifth place. TOP 09 and Residents won two representatives each.
The problem is that even companies that have their headquarters in Prague 1 encroach on residential zones. And we have many so-called mailbox companies, i.e. companies that do not actually have an establishment there. We have hundreds of such companies in Prague 1, rather thousands of smaller ones.
Such companies are also entitled to a parking card. And that makes parking in Prague 1 crowded. We would really like to limit it only to companies that have an establishment here and need parking.
In its climate plan, Prague has introduced a toll for entering the city center. Are you in favor of introducing such a toll?
I am rather restrained in this, because in a way it is another step towards making the city center essentially an open-air museum. I think it would also affect people who live in the city center and to whom people go to visit and the like.
I don’t think this path is a happy one. I think that the path to limiting parking in the center is much simpler, in short, if you don’t have a place to park your car, you won’t go to the center.
The roundabout at Prašná brána caused a great wave of resentment. In September, the city court declared that it was created there illegally. So what will happen to him now?
The illegality, if I have the correct information, consists in the fact that the circuit was created as a temporary structure, not as a permanent structure, which requires some kind of jurisdiction with the participation of the surrounding citizens, associations and so on.
The court canceled the permit for the roundabout at Prašná brány, according to the verdict, Prague 1 proceeded illegally

There are basically two ways. Either the municipal authority will comply with the court’s request and perform administrative actions in such a way that it is in accordance with the law and make this roundabout a standard permanent structure.
Or – and I’m more in favor of this – they will reassess whether the roundabout really fulfills the task that the town hall promised it would. If it does not fulfill the task, then let’s cancel it without compensation and leave the intersection there as it used to be.
If it fulfills the task, then of course let’s keep it, because the flow of traffic is important. But I would be a big supporter of us looking at the aesthetics of the treatment, because I don’t think a suburb-type roundabout should be in front of Prašna.
