“Prize of Diversity”: Street newspaper “20er” honored for social commitment
The City of Innsbruck’s “Prize for Diversity – Promoting Coexistence” goes to the “20er – die Straßenzeitung” this year. Since 2008, the 4,000 euro prize has been awarded annually for outstanding activities in the field of integration.
INNSBRUCK. The “20s” has been an important part of the Tyrolean media landscape, public space and Innsbruck city life for 25 years. The street newspaper stands for the individual aspects of diversity and enables people who are otherwise often marginalized to earn a small income and participate. According to the jury of the “Prize for Diversity”, the use of the “20er” goes far beyond the tasks of an editorial office and contributes to stimulating social discourse. The prize also recognizes the street vendors who work at the “20er”, who often have a history of migration and flight and who have the opportunity to communicate their attitude through their journalistic work. “Editorial staff and street vendors work on an equal footing,” the jury explained. With the prize, the city wants to honor the courageous, clear attitude that the ’20s’ takes on social issues and their commitment to social issues. “We want to honor both the newspaper producers and the salespeople who give the ’20s’ their face and bring them to the front of the curtain,” emphasized City Councilor Elisabeth Mayr, who is responsible for integration, during the award ceremony in the district meeting place in Wilten.
Promote coexistence
Every year since 2008, the city has honored people and institutions with the “Prize of Diversity – Promoting Coexistence” who have made a contribution to the integration of immigrants in everyday life and particularly promote coexistence in Innsbruck. The jury consists of City Councilor Elisabeth Mayr, Zeliha Arslan (Committee Chairperson), Hannes Gstir (State of Tyrol), Meral Sevencan (Integration Commissioner City of Kufstein) and Chief Executive Wolfgang Andexlinger (Urban Planning, Urban Development and Integration).
