Toulouse. “Phantasmagorie”, a magic lantern show at the Museum of Precious Arts
As part of its reopening, the Musée des Arts-Précieux-Paul-Dupuy, which has included its space allocated to pre-cinema, is joining forces with the Synchro-Festivalorganized by the Cinémathèque de Toulouse, and hosts a magic lantern show.
Considered the ancestor of cinema, the spectacle magic lantern, more than the simple invention of the projection of luminous images, inaugurated a show of a new kind, the phantasmagoria, whose purpose was to amaze as much as to frighten. Making monsters, ghosts or devils appear… artists-magicians were already having fun, more than 200 years ago, making a bewildered audience shiver!
In the form of a tale created from authentic painted glass plates from the 19th century, this cinema-show makes you feel all the magic of these luminous images which characterized the invention of cinema. Excerpts from films such as “Le revenant”, “Le cauldron infernal” mingle with these images.
Anne Gourdet-Marès, projectionist and head of the collection of cinematographic devices of the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation, presented this cinema show. Author of a history of cinemas for young audiences, she herself creates magic lantern shows and leads workshops on technical inventions in cinema.
