Assizes of popular gardens in struggle in Rouen
On December 3 and 4, Rouen will host the foundations of popular gardens in struggle
Whether workers, family, self-managed or any other form, popular gardens are, everywhere in France, seriously threatened by concrete.
Too often considered as adjustment variables for urban planners in their tireless quest for new land to be urbanized, they are willingly presented by the latter as “ hollow teeth without much interest and interchangeable, even useless.
We do not agree.
For us, it is precisely their place apart, on the fringes of an urbanity that separates and glorifies a collective without community that makes them so essential to a flourishing developed city.
Because they are open doors to a sensitive world, the value of these places remains unknown to worshipers of capitalist thought who think they have to estimate, count and evaluate everything.
Their vegetable production is not anecdotal either and often allows modest people to have quality food. However, all this does not fall under the market system either and in fact, once again passes under the radars of planners.
Everywhere on hard, on concrete and on sells. Here, the trees are replaced by the towers of an eco-neighborhood which is green only for the color of its private barriers. Elsewhere, a garden is being rehabilitated to turn it into soulless landscaped parks.
Yet the resistance is organized.
Everywhere in France, people meet, unite and plot against the advance of the metropolitan desert.
To fight, to continue to live in a territory promised to concrete is already a victory but to push back the diggers is even more so. Whether at the Vaîtes de Besançon, the Lentillères de Dijon or more recently at the Jardins à Défendre (J.A.D.) d’Aubervilliers, both small and big victories exist and depend only on the determination of those who cannot bring themselves to see the town be achieved at the expense of its inhabitants.
In the four corners of the country, collectives and associations have decided to unite, to form a common front so that the gardens can continue to live and even multiply, from the suburbs to the city centres.
This weekend, the coalition is meeting in Rouen, Normandy. On the sidelines of the discussions, we invite you to meet on Saturday at 2 p.m., in front of the Jardins Joyeux enclosure (2 rue de Joyeux) for a demonstration “ spade in hand for the defense of the gardens of the former cloister from the clutches of the promoter Sedelka and an accomplice town hall.
