“Probable Scenario”. Anticyclone could ‘freeze’ Portugal this winter
IT IS just a “probable scenario”, but it could indeed come to pass. An “anticyclone located in Central Europe”, more specifically in the Siberian region of Russia, could cause a current of “colder and drier” air to spread to other places in Europe, such as Portugal, throughout the meteorological winter (which starts December 1).
The explanation was given to News by the Minute by Patrícia Gomes, technically responsible for carrying out the forecast for the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
At stake is a phenomenon that is not at all “abnormal”, and that could bring a drop in temperatures to several European countries, although it is “northern Europe that will suffer most” from this phenomenon, explained the forecaster.
But despite forecasts warning of this possibility, it is still not possible to determine with certainty whether the temperature “this year will decrease more than normal”, said Patrícia Gomes.
Incidentally, IPMA forecasts for the next four weeks even point to a different scenario. Citing the most recent monthly forecast from the meteorological institute, a “positive anomaly” is expected in terms of temperatures – that is, values ”slightly above” what is expected for this time of year.
However, despite not predicting the consequences of this anticyclone “for the beginning of winter” in Portugal, the truth is that “winter is three months” and, therefore, it is best to wait to see if this air current “more cold and dry” will, or will not, reach the national territory over the next few months.
So, what can we expect from the weather over the next 10 days? According to forecasts currently available, the same source highlighted News by the Minuteon Tuesday there should be a “slight decrease in the minimum temperature”, although on the 1st, Thursday, it is expected that the values will begin to “risen soundproofed”, especially with regard to the maximums.
From there, explained the previous, only “small variations” are foreseen [de temperatura] in the order of 2ºC and 3ºC” in national territory.
And if we also look at the interior regions of the country, where thermometers have registered “low” values, it is to be expected that they will still remain – and even “below 0ºC”.
On the other hand, the rain is expected to give “truce” between this Monday and Tuesday. However, everything changes from Wednesday, November 30th. Patrícia Gomes thus added that “everything indicates” that the precipitation will regress, “a little throughout the country”, and that it will remain “until the 7th of December”.
