The number of enrolled students in Berlin and Brandenburg has fallen compared to the previous year. In the winter semester 2022/2023, exactly 198,429 students in Berlin and 50,443 in Brandenburg are enrolled as main and secondary students, as the Office for Statistics in Potsdam announced on Monday. According to this, the number has fallen by 2.7 percent in Berlin and by 0.2 percent in Brandenburg compared to the 2021/2022 winter semester. According to the Statistical Office, the main reason for the decline was the move of the state-recognized private Steinbeis University from Berlin to Magdeburg.

The number of foreign students has risen by around 200 to 46,345 in Berlin this semester and by around 1,300 to 10,814 in Brandenburg. In both Berlin and Brandenburg, most students are enrolled at a university. The subjects are law, economics and social sciences with a share of 35 percent in Berlin and 39 percent in Brandenburg, followed by engineering with 27 percent and 23 percent respectively.
