Strike at all breweries on Monday
Business
On Monday there will be a strike in the Salzburg Stiegl Brewery in the Maxglan district and in all other breweries. The Stiegl works council chairman confirmed this to the ORF on Friday. Reason being wage and salary negotiations – also with the brewers, nationwide.
That’s why this strike has now been called for all of Austria and all breweries. Workers in this industry are demanding eleven percent more wages, and employers recently didn’t even want to compensate for inflation. In the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg, too, there should be an hourly strike on Monday.
Three hours in the first step
The first shift will show up for work at 4am. However, the decision was made not to start the brewing process until three hours later so as not to have to interrupt it. The machines are therefore only switched on at 07.00. “So that the quality of the beer is not supported,” says Works Council Chairwoman Birgit Siller. According to Siller, that corresponds to a three-hour argument.
The result is either a lower beer production on Monday or the second shift would then have to make up for the production backlog by working overtime. That would cause additional costs.
ÖGB reject one-off payments
It is clear that the brewers are still demanding an eleven percent increase in their wages, according to Siller: “The employers are offering a wage increase of one hundred euros or a one-off payment of EUR 300. That is not acceptable.”
The next round of wage negotiations is scheduled for December 9th. Until then, there should be no further warning strikes. If no agreement is reached, then according to the ÖGB there is a risk of unlimited strikes in Austria’s breweries.
