VR performances are coming to the Netherlands: ‘You make the choices’
You can prepare your current cinema visit as you wish. 3D is not that exciting nowadays, since the emergence of IMAX. remember that that too will become less exciting once we all get to know the newest form of film viewing: virtual reality shows.
Three Dutch film theaters will probably offer virtual reality performances on a structural basis. From December 22, the virtual experiences will be part of the programming of LantarenVenster in Rotterdam, LUX in Nijmegen and De Schuur in Haarlem.
‘You make the choices’
The VR experiences can sometimes be experienced in installations in cinemas and sometimes in the cinema. So you just sit in the room for half an hour, with VR glasses on your head. The first program, Travel beyond faith, consists of six different experiences. For example, the visitor can experience what it is like to stand on top of Mount Everest, walk around in the depths of the ocean or come face to face with prehistoric dinosaurs. You make the choices with your console. “It’s an interactive experience,” explains Babette Wijnjtes, the film distributor of this project Subway from. You decide where the story goes. If you want to go left, go left and if you want to go right, go right. It’s something you have to see to understand.”
Virtual reality (VR) is a technique for discovering a virtual world. By using a VR headset, the senses can be stimulated and the viewer can be seen in a three-dimensional landscape. The cinemas are collaborating on the project with NOW: Realitya publisher of VR experiences and a platform for virtual reality education, research and innovation.
Not the time there are virtual reality shows
This is not the first time such a concept has been established. In 2016, Amsterdam started with a VR cinema, which has since been permanently closed. Cinema chain Pathé has also recently announced that they have the same kind of launch. There are also several Social projects who want to tell a story through VR glasses. Wijntjes probably thinks this is a unique project: “It is not aimed at gaming, but rather at a cartoon.”
