New talks between the government and the opposition in Venezuela on Saturday
The government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is resuming talks with the opposition this weekend after more than a year’s absence, the Norwegian embassy confirms.
The case is updated
The official talks between the parties to find a solution to the political crisis the country has faced since 2018 have been stalled since October 2021.
In recent months, several international actors have worked to get them going again, among them Norway, which has been facilitating the negotiations in recent years and has had a diplomat in the country since August.
The opposition calls for free and fair elections, while the government wants the international community to recognize Maduro as the country’s rightful president and impose sanctions on his government. The next election is scheduled to take place in 2024.
– The dialogue between Maduro’s government and the Venezuelan opposition will resume on November 25 and 26, Colombian President Gustavo Petro tweeted on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Norwegian embassy in Mexico confirms in a Twitter– announcement that the talks will resume on Saturday in Mexico – arranged by Norway.
– There the parties will sign a partial agreement on social issues, says the embassy.
