Prime Minister Robert Golob and First President of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar agreed on coordinated foreign policy action at the first joint press conference.
They highlighted several priorities, including Slovenia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council and the situation in the Western Balkans, where Slovenia is active through a joint initiative with Croatia, the Brdo-Brijuni Process.
For candidacy in the UN Security Council, “Slovenia must make great diplomatic efforts in order to succeed. I am sure that I can help with this and this will be one of the priority tasks that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the government will entrust to me,” said the newly elected president.
Another joint priority is efforts to stabilize the situation in the Western Balkans, which means Slovenia’s efforts to ensure that countries in the region remain on the agenda of the EU institutions, Golob added.
These efforts were constructive, especially in the last year, he said, adding that Slovenia will continue on this path.
“The stabilization of the Western Balkans and faster accession processes to the EU are in the strategic interest of our country, and both of us will definitely do everything in our power to continue to support them,” he said.
Pirc Musarjeva plans to continue with the legacy of the President of the Republic Borut Pahor regarding the regular meetings of the Brdo-Brijuni process.
In Slovenia, the presidency is largely ceremonial, and foreign policy is one of the few areas where the president can be active, as Pahor has shown in his two five-year mandates.
