PORTUGAL

Lionesses with a lot of youth move forward in the Portuguese Cup

Sugar Mizzy November 20, 2022

A thrashing and four debuts marked the first step in the queen competition

Sporting Clube de Portugal’s main women’s football team visited and clearly won, this Sunday, against SC Rio Tinto, from the III Division, by 0-13 in the third round of the Portuguese Cup.

Maria Ferreira (four), Joana Dantas (two), Inês Gonçalves (four), Andreia Bravo, Rita Fontemanha and Cristiana Martins scored the goals of the match. In turn, Nicole Cassamá (16 years old), Cíntia Martins (15 years old), Bruna Ramos (17 years old) and Matilde Nave (15 years old) played for the first time in the first team.

In their debut in the 2022/2023 edition of the queen competition, after having won the previous season, the Lionesses appeared on the pitch of Estádio Cidade de Rio Tinto with a lot of youth (21.09 average age of the starting eleven) to face a amateur and also very young northern ensemble – and whose project is based, precisely, on training.

Monopolizing the ball from the start, Sporting CP immediately took the initiative and it was very close that, first, Mariana Rosa and, later, Joana Dantas, failed to finish in the best way to open the scoring very early. More effective was Maria Ferreira, who, assisted perfectly, only had to pull over to make it 0-1 even before ten minutes.

From an early age, the natural differences between the two teams became evident on the pitch and the match unfolded exclusively in the midfield of SC Rio Tinto. Thus, with a series and without taking their foot off the accelerator, the Lionesses effectively multiplied their advantage in the result, which already marked 0-4 at 35 minutes – goals from Maria Ferreira (two) – completed the trump card – and Joana Dantas.

After Fátima Dutra, with a direct free kick, confirmed the crossbar, Inês Gonçalves added her name to the list of scorers in a double dose and Joana Dantas set the expressive 0-7 at halftime.

The one-way play continued – Carolina Jóia didn’t have any work on goal – and right at the start of the second half Inês Gonçalves matched accurately, at the first post, two corner kicks and signed the 0-9 and his poker in the personal account. Shortly after, in the 55th minute, Maria Ferreira reached the same number of goals and made it 0-10.

As far as the result is concerned, everything was decided early on and little story remained of the meeting, despite the worthy and uninterrupted effort of the young team from SC Rio Tinto. With the 0-11 scored by Andreia Bravo, Sporting CP carried out, at the hour of the game, its first substitutions, featuring Cristiana Martins and Matilde Nave, with the latter making her debut in the main team at the age of 15, as did Bruna Ramos (17 years old), Nicole Cassamá (16 years old) and Cíntia Martins (15 years old), shortly after.

To build the final 0-13, Rita Fontemanha and Cristiana Martins also scored.

Confirmed the victory and passage to the next round, the holders of the title will continue their walk in the Taça de Portugal. Back to the National Championship, the Lionesses will travel to FC Famalicão.

Sporting CP: Carolina Jóia [GR]Mariana Rosa, Fátima Dutra, Melisa Hasanbegović (Nicole Cassamá 80′), Alicia Correia (Cristiana Martins 59′), Rita Fontemanha [C]Andreia Bravo (Cíntia Martins 80′), Vera Cid, Maria Ferreira, Joana Dantas (Matilde Nave 59′) and Inês Gonçalves (Bruna Ramos 67′).
