GERB: Bulgaria’s energy security is at risk (overview)
The next closure of the thermal power plants, we lose 3.2 billion euros
Shutting down the coal plants is equivalent to shutting down reactor four of the Kozloduy NPP
83% of the world’s energy comes from fossil fuels
Urgent convening of the Advisory Council for National Security to the President due to the written commitment in the Resilience Restoration Plan and to closing the coal demand capacities in the declaration of the GERB-SDS parliamentary tribune.
“The commitments in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RSP) threaten the energy security of the country, dear Mr. President, the convening of the Advisory Council for National Security cannot be postponed,” said MP Delyan Dobrev from the parliamentary rostrum.
He clarifies that the implementation of the commitments according to the plan will lead to a contraction of the economy by 4 percent. “Those responsible for making this promise to Brussels should be investigated by the competent authorities,” he insisted.
Dobrev was adamant that closing the coal plants is equivalent to Bulgaria closing four reactors at the Kozloduy NPP.
The country should not suspend any annual amount of electricity either, because after the closure of the pipes we will lose 3.2 billion euros, which is equal to our entire annual amount of electricity, Dobrev pointed out.
“The export of current is a record this year and amounts to 10.8 million megawatt hours until November 13, 2022. That is, the amount is almost as much as I need to stimulate electricity production. By 2026, it will become a carrier of electricity,” added Dobrev.
The closing of the coal plants will be death for Bulgaria and we question our counterparties who buy electricity from us in a crisis situation, warned economic expert Mika Zaikova.
She says that nearly 83% of the world’s energy comes from fossil fuels. “Closing coal plants is not something that can be decided overnight – neither within one, nor within 2-3 years. Only 1.75% of all energy is obtained from green energies – wind and sun. This means new installations because wind and sun are temporary phenomena. Businesses and households need reliable energy that flows every day”, emphasized Zaikova.

“Revival” in defense of thermal power plants
With the commitments made to the EU in connection with the Recovery and Resilience Plan, it is only committed to 3 years – until the end of 2025, to offset your carbon emissions by 40%, provided that they are currently at 50% lower than 10 years ago. This was stated by the leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadinov at a briefing in the parliament. He sends the invitation to all parliamentary parties for talks on renegotiation of the terms of the Plan.
“Our opponents in the plenary hall interpret this not as the closing of the thermal power plants, but as a reduction of their efficiency and capacity. But whether they will remain formally working does not matter. And at any moment he can adopt such rules that oblige us to close all thermal power plants”, said Kostadinov.
