What if the Netherlands weakens Brussels?
In his new novel The Song of Europe Leon de Winter paints a less than encouraging picture of the year 2047. Nothing is more allowed in Europe’s surveillance union than is. Yet there are still differences of approach in the completely gone European Union (EU). And which country is the strongest? Right.
Leon de Winter: ‘The Netherlands was a global leader in charging individual CO2emissions. The CO2storage on meat was so high that you could not eat meat more than once a week if you also wanted to travel or do something else that was CO2 according to the rules.2 caused.’
The romantic does not exaggerate. For decades, the Netherlands has been the best boy in the class in the EU. And once the Netherlands has a prime minister who dares to say ‘no, no, no’ (Mark Rutte in 2020 about an unconditional corona recovery fund), many Dutch people, not only in Brussels, are ashamed of themselves. “We are ashamed.”
No, the attitude is always: The Netherlands must show that it is more good than other parts! Europe will lead the world, and the Netherlands in Europe. Has Brussels just decided that no new cars with a combustion engine may be sold in 2035, Rutte IV wants all new cars to be emission-free by 2030 at the latest. The CO2emissions will not be reduced by 55 percent, as European Commissioner Frans Timmermans wishes, no, 60 percent is the goal.
