Andrew Cogliano overcomes fear, Valeri Nichushkin scratches in Finland
Andrew Cogliano appeared to suffer a head injury in the first period of today’s game in Finland (Finland) after taking a hit from the 6-foot-3, 226-pound defender. Vladislav Gavrikov. Cogliano stayed down for several seconds and then went straight to the locker room.
But good news: The Cogs returned to the ice to start the second period.
Gavrikov was sentenced to a minor penalty for interfering with the hit. It’s possible he’ll face some additional discipline from the league, though it looked like it might have hit the shoulder from at least one angle. I doubt anything will happen now that the Cogs are back.
Already short-handed Avalanche were also without the services of Valeri Nichushkin in the game. He completed the warm-up for the game, but was a scratch when it came time to submit the official lineup sheet.
The Avalanche lead 2-0 after the period thanks to goals by Logan O’Connor and JT Compher.
The game started along these lines:
Rodrigues-MacKinnon-Rantanen
Lehkonen-Compher-Kaut
Cogliano-Newhook-O’Connor
Maltsev-Hunt-MacDonald
Toews-Makar
Byram-Manson
Girard-Johnson
Georgiev
