Trojská kotlina: Prague will build flood protection – it will withstand 100-year water
The planned revitalization of the Troja Basin, that is area practically including the flow of the Vltava and its immediate surroundings along both banks from the Trojské bridge to the place where the ferry connects Podbaba with Pohorí, is nothing new. They have been talking about turning the location into an attractive recreational area with promenades, parks, a wild river, as well as new footbridges between Císařský ostrov and Troja, since at least 2015. The project should also include improvement of flood protection on both banks of the river, especially on the right.
Vulnerable Troy
The reasons are obvious. When high water reached the capital in the past, especially in the botanical garden or the adjacent castle grounds, it caused enormous damage. Ending Council The city of Prague therefore approved the proposal of deputies Petr Hlaváček and Jana Plamínková (both STAN) regarding flood protection, which will be part of the plan revitalization of the Troja basin.
“It will be created as part of the project a flood wall that will not only increase protection from Q15 to Q100, but will also offer new views of the animal enclosures to the Zoo and the river landscape,” reads the material approved by the councilors. In practice, the Prague Zoo should wait protection against so-called 100-year-old water, instead of the current 15-year-old water.
Flood Park
The revitalization of the Trojská kotlina envisages a number of future changes to the location. Another of them, which will fulfill the function of recreation, but also anti-flood, will be the so-called “Flood Park”. He will be located on the Imperial Island. He should have by two streams, fords and pools.
“It will happen improvement of flood protection by creating a so-called safety overhang (of controlled overflow) which it protects the island from further rupture, but also supports biodiversity for example, a fish crossing and a new biotopia,” states the reasoned report. The widening of the Vltava river bed will also help to reduce the potential flood situation as part of the revitalization.
“By widening the Vltava river beds, we are returning to the river the space that originally belonged to it and thus we will achieve a reduction in the river level during a flood in the territory of Rohanské ostrov, Troja, Holešovice and Karlín.” Possible floods should also have a lower impact in Stromovka.
Back to the Future
The planned revitalization of the Trojská kotlina should return the appearance of the banks of the Vltava several years back. “Unlike other cities, Prague has relatively large amount of green areas. But many do not use them or are in a desperate state. We would therefore like to use these areas meaningfully. We are planning restore the banks to the state they were in roughly a hundred years ago. We don’t want to turn this area into a polished French park, it will be more of an urban wilderness,” said IPR director Ondřej Boháč some time ago.

At that time, the Trojská kotlina paid for a purely recreational area with even a rural stamp. The implementation of the revitalization of the Trojská kotlina, according to the material of the Institute of Development Planning, hl. m of Prague (IPR) estimates by 2030. The costs of the project, which will completely change the location and provide the citizens of Prague with greater safety against floods, as well as a beach or a playground with game elements, reach billions.””
