In recent months, more people have applied for asylum in the Netherlands | NOW
Over the past three months, more people have again applied for asylum in the Netherlands. Statistics Netherlands reports this on the basis of figures from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). In July, August and September, more than ten thousand people applied for the first time to stay in the Netherlands.
According to the CBS, 10,600 people applied for asylum for the first time in the third quarter. That is 3,555 more than in the previous months. In 2021, nine thousand people applied for asylum in the same months.
Most of the people who have applied for asylum come from Syria. That number doubled in the third quarter compared to the second quarter. More people from Afghanistan also came to the Netherlands.
In addition, more people have come to the Netherlands because a family member has been told that they can stay. The IND reports 3,605 of these family members, 465 more than in the second quarter. Most of these people came from Syria.
Due to the corona pandemic, fewer asylum applications were made in 2020 and 2021, says CBS. Since the travel restrictions have been lifted, the number of people applying for asylum in the Netherlands is also increasing again.
Fewer asylum applications from Ukrainians and Russians
Asylum applications were also received from people from Ukraine. Because of the invasion by Russia they have been given a status, which is therefore not a special one for the time being. Nevertheless, the past five Ukrainians started to go to the IND. That is less than the quarter before, when fifteen Ukrainians applied. In total there are about 95,000 Ukrainians registered in the Netherlands.
The IND payment obligation of people with Russian nationality. They do not have such a protected status. That number also decreased in the third quarter. In the first and second message, 120 and 170 Russians are still with the government organization.
