October 28 is also traditionally the Day of the Central Bohemian Region. On this occasion, contribution organizations, established by the region, offer a special program or admission for a symbolic price. Traditionally, the Czech Karst Museum in Beroun also participates in this event. This time, it has prepared a guided walk for children called Step by Step focused on rumours, legends and ghosts.

“What is told here is the legend about the founding of Beroun, written down by Václav Hájek from Libočan. He claimed that Tětín is actually the place from where Beroun was founded. It’s actually clear when you stand on the lookout and you can see the whole of Beroun,” reveals Jana Šuchlová, guide of the Museum of Bohemian Karst in Beroun.
Those interested could also visit the nearby Barrandien Geopark, where a so-called Day with a Geologist was prepared. Here, even adults could try, for example, panning Czech garnets or tapping calcite.
“They can pick up a hammer, try to look for fossils or break crystals. We play animations for them, I have a computer game ready here today, the children can play geologist in minecraft in some model territory, where we would not normally get to in the Czech Republic. So, for example, if we planted them in Africa, they can test how they would succeed. They can take the stones they find or knock out here home, and they can also take away carved Czech grenades,” said Pavel Bokr, educator and lecturer at Geopark Barrandien.

“I’ve found three grenades so far, three small pieces, it’s great.”
“One learns how it all came about, how it all started. It’s interesting and we like it here.”
“We’ve made two grenades so far, and I still have two here.”
In addition to knocking and slashing, small and large pitavalas could also use other senses. For example, using touch to read important information from stones.
“They can try out how to read stones. We help them with this with instructive riddles. Children can definitely tell which stone is from the sea and which is from the swamp, based on the fossils. At the same time, they can tell which stone is from the deep and had the sea. When they take it in their hand, so from the shallow sea I can feel the sand, just like on the beach. From the deep sea, I can feel the fine mud that is in a deeper environment. We can also read what the temperature of the sea was,” adds Pavel Bokr, educator and lecturer at Geopark Barrandien.
As part of the celebration of the Day of the Central Bohemian Region, a program was also prepared in the nearby area. In Hořovice, those interested were treated to a fun tour of local monuments, and examples of medieval games were prepared at Žebrák.
