Antwerp trainer Van Bommel looks back on a failed robbery
“That was a shock,” said Van Bommel to the Gazet van Antwerpen. “But I give my compliments to the police. They were very quickly on the scene and recorded it well. That often has to be translated.”
“I’m doing well. I was able to give it a place. The days after I was just back on the training field. You just have to continue as quickly as possible. If you start thinking about it too much, you stand still.”
“Society is hardening, everything is becoming more aggressive. I myself, partly because of my always being careful. And I have always done that. Now it came in handy. It is striking that we now have to talk about this, that people are thinking about getting watches or take things that you have fond memories of.”
Van Bommel managed to escape the robber by trying to reverse out of the garage, where he collided with another car. The robber fled when the alarm went off. He is not the first (former) football player to deal with such a situation. Dusan Tadic (Ajax), Eran Zahavi (former PSV), Dele Alli (former Tottenham Hotspur), Ángel Di María (former PSG) have been attacked in recent years by improved players.
