LUXEMBOURG – César and Lester have launched an application to encourage waste collection by citizens and fight against pollution.
“Collecting waste, cleaning nature, is creating value” explains César, 31-year-old resident at the origin of the project “Clean something for nothing” (CSFN). With his friend Lester, they are developing a mobile application to measure everyone’s efforts in collecting waste, organize collective cleaning operations and raise awareness of the cause.
In a few months, they have created a community of several thousand people around the world, who use the application and share their results on social networks. The duo pitched their initiative to a panel of judges as part of the Fit For Start program at Luxembourg’s Arch Summit innovation forum on Thursday evening, hoping to garner support to scale the project.
Several tons of waste collected
“I started picking up litter around me a few years ago, because I didn’t like to see it. Then, it became a habit that I kept wherever I went” says César. He first creates an Instagram page and launches the hashtag “CleanSomethingForNothing”, to publicize his actions. “The philosophy is to collect, clean, without expecting anything in return. What we do to benefit everyone. To people, to animals, to the planet,” he adds.
With his friend Lester, a computer scientist, they develop the CSFN app (Clean Something For Nothing) which they inaugurate at the beginning of 2022. From the first month, people had already collected 3 tons of waste. A few months later, 80 tons, in Luxembourg and in around forty countries.
While waiting for a profile on the application, we geolocate ourselves and record the amount of waste collected. You can also organize operations, gather users and see who are the most active cleaners in the city or region. The ultimate goal is to cooperate with businesses, municipalities, schools and national parks. “Pollution is a universal problem. Our country is no exception. But every little action counts. We can make Luxembourg cleaner,” he concludes.
15 numbers of start-ups from 9 different countries have been selected to participate in the 13th edition of the Fit 4 Start acceleration program. The key: 6 months of coaching, pre-seed financing and privileged access to all the key players in the Luxembourg start-up ecosystem.
On Wednesday October 26 and Thursday October 27, during the Arch Summit, the Tomorrow Street Accelerator’s flagship technology event, 67 pre-selected start-ups presented their project to a jury of experts, entrepreneurs and investors. who selected 10 start-ups from the digital/data-driven sector and 5 start-ups from the health technology sector.
