At the heart of Milan’s nightlife, the Navigli find a breath of post-covid renewal. This Thursday, the actors of the life of the district and the association of the Military Navy diffuse an atmosphere of “Magic”.
Milan’s canals are finally reviving their reputation for bustling neighborhood life. Walk along the quays from theaperitif until late in the evening is one of the favorite activities of Milanese and tourists alike, and the flea market on the last Sunday of the month is an institution.
After Fiori e sapori d’autunno sul Naviglio Grande organized at the beginning of the month, here is a new way to discover this district through the actors of the life of the Navigli : Magia in Darsena, an event organized in the premises of the Association of the Military Navy.
See you this Thursday, October 27 on the theme of Halloween, in a magical atmosphere and a touch of Gothic. The event is open to adults and children with a magic show, music and gondola rides on the canals to showcase the activities offered on the Navigli (Dragon Boat, Canoe Kayak, Paddle…).
Milan and its Navigli
In total, it took seven centuries – from the 12th to the 19th – to complete the construction of the canals of Milan. Today, a big party navigate was buried. Only the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese remain connected to the Darsena (former port of Milan, renovated on the occasion of the Universal Expo 2015).
the Naviglio Grande is the oldest of Milan’s canals. The first written source dates back to 1209 although the works could date from 1177, when Milan was rebuilt after the arrival of Barbarossa. Initially, the purpose of the canal was to irrigate the fields located on the outskirts of Milan and also to be used as a defensive moat.
Work did not begin to make it navigable until 1257.
the Naviglio Pavese, is the waterway wanted by the Visconti to unite Milan and their lands towards Pavia. Galeazzo Visconti in 1359 began the construction of the works. Subsequently, interest in this canal gradually waned, especially after the fall of Visconti and the Sforzas. It was then the Spanish governor Pedro Enriquez de Acevedo who had the Pavese canal rebuilt by Giuseppe Meda who also built the Darsena.
There is also a third channel known as Naviglio Martesana we Naviglio Piccolo (north of Milan). It was commissioned by Francesco Sforza in 1460, and in 1482 Ludovico il Moro asked Leonardo da Vinci to create a system to connect Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Milan.
