Luxembourg without bird flu, but poultry and prize bird owners respect preventive biosecurity measures!
The avian influenza virus is not currently present in the Grand Duchy, but it is now very present in our neighboring countries. The avian influenza virus is detected in migratory and non-migratory birds as well as in poultry. As the wild bird migration season has started, the risk of occurrence of this disease is again high for Luxembourg.
In order to prevent the appearance and spread of this highly pathogenic virus in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration the following biosecurity precautionary recommendations to all owners of poultry and birds:
- It is strongly recommended to confine the poultry indoors, respectively to cover the poultry runs with nets.
- Feeding and watering must take place inside buildings.
- Any abnormal poultry mortality should be reported to a veterinarian or to the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (tel: 247-82539).
- All poultry imports must be certified (TRACES) by an official veterinarian of the country of origin. This obligation also applies to the purchase of poultry on a market.
The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration would like to point out that the consumption of meat and eggs is without risk for humans.
