Expansion of the A5 near Frankfurt: Ten lanes are feasible
A study has emerged: The A5 could have ten lanes between Frankfurt and Friedberg. As long as the project is being examined, the planned formal eight-lane expansion is on hold.
Frankfurt – A ten-lane widening of the Autobahn 5 between the Frankfurter Kreuz and the Friedberg junction is fundamentally feasible. This is the result of a study by the federal highway company. As long as the project is being examined, the planned formal eight-lane expansion of the motorway is on hold.
“The basic feasibility of the striped expansion of the expansion sections identified therein has been proven,” says Christa Tserdakidou-Mölbert, spokeswoman for the Autobahn-Gesellschaft, about the section examined.
The Autobahn-GmbH and the Federal Ministry of Transport are currently coordinating the results, she said. As a result, the ministry and the Autobahn company wanted to decide whether and how an expansion of the A5 was planned. “A ten-lane expansion is currently considered not very likely‘ she elaborated.
Ten lanes between Nordwestkreuz and Westkreuz Frankfurt
As long as the ministry and the Autobahn company have not made a commitment, the eight-lane expansion between the Nordwestkreuz in Frankfurt and the Friedberg junction are no longer planned. In fact, the route has had eight lanes for years due to the so-called temporary release of the hard shoulder.
In the traffic committee of the Frankfurt Römer, representatives of the coalition recently spoke out against a ten-lane expansion of the A5. With a formal expansion of the actual eight-lane A5, Frankfurt would benefit from additional noise protection, argued Kristina Luxen (SPD). They regret that no additional noise protection is now planned, she said.
Expansion of the A5: Autobahn-GmbH is planning further work in the Rhine-Main area
As the construction company Deges announced, the A5 between Nordwestkreuz and Westkreuz Frankfurt is to be built on ten lanes. The Autobahn-GmbH confirmed this. The plan is to build two new lanes in each direction and to demolish and rebuild bridges and culverts. The nodes are part of the planning area: The A5 is linked to the A648 at Westkreuz. The A66 and A5 meet at the Nordwestkreuz. In addition, the state road 3005 from Eschborn leads to the motorway junction.
The Autobahn-GmbH is planning eight lanes on the A3 between the airport junction and the Mönchhof-Dreieck as well as the conversion of the Offenbach motorway junction. (Florian Leclerc)
