Number of corona deaths in the Netherlands more than halved in the second quarter
The Central Bureau of Statistics announced this today on the basis of preliminary figures on causes of death in the Netherlands.
Of the 1,420 people who succumbed to Covid, a large majority were 80 years older: two-thirds. More than 28 percent were in the 65-80 age category. 6 percent were younger than 65. April in particular was an outlier in the second quarter with 911 cases.
3.5 percent of total
Of all deaths in the second quarter, more than 41,000, Covid-19 is responsible for 3.5 percent of the total. In the quarter, that percentage was even higher: then 8.3 percent of the cases with a death rate of more than 43,000 were due to corona.
For 2020 and 2021 it is known that the number of deaths in the second and third quarters is lower than in the first and fourth. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that the number of corona-related deaths could rise again later this year.
There was ‘excess mortality’ in the second quarter, which means that more people have died in April and June than is normally expected. This excess mortality is particularly noticeable among people over 65 and receiving ‘Wlz users’. These are people who need long-term care, often elderly people in care and nursing homes.
flu epidemic
In the same (second) quarter a year ago, the death rate from Covid-19 was also a lot higher. This year the number is 46 percent lower: last year there were 2610 people who succumbed to corona.
In contrast, the number of deaths ‘from diseases of the respiratory organs’ was higher than last year, and also higher than in years carried out. “This may have to do with the flu epidemic that reigned in the Netherlands for thirteen weeks from mid-March,” the CBS writes, based on figures from the National Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM).
