Prague 5: The Halloween Workshop invites young and old to the Laundry Community Center
19/10/2022 9:15 | Press Release
“On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, the Laundry Community Center prepared an art workshop for children and elementary school students on the theme of Halloween. Participants will immerse themselves in the mysterious world of ghosts, ghosts, sorcerers and witches and create decorations mainly from recycled materials,” said councilor JUDr. Petr Lachnit.
The workshop will take place in the atmosphere of popular playful parts, where the primary process is the creation and, for the child participants, the product itself, which they can take away. Halloween is one of the youngest holidays in the Czech Republic, and although I think it came from America, it is not. Its roots come from the Celts.
The last day of October was the border between the two main periods (summer and winter), and at the same time, the day that the Celts perceived as the boundary, when the border between the world of the living and the dead blurs. They therefore built altars, containing bird feathers, animal skulls and similar attributes, which were intended to establish a connection with the dead, for whom worship ceremonies were then held.

The holiday was called Samhain in Celtic. Many of the original rituals have survived to this day. For example, people still build small altars in front of their houses, but carved pumpkins are used to build them, and candles are lit instead of fires. Halloween is a holiday of the dead, so ghosts that return home on this day are an inherent part of it.
The name was created by shortening the English “All Hallows’ Eve”, i.e. “The Eve of All Saints”, so it is evident that it is related to the celebration of the Remembrance of the Dead, which falls on November 2. It is on this day that people remember their loved ones who are no longer with them, their graves undergo a major cleaning and we offer them fresh flowers, new candles and personal items. The message of Halloween and All Souls’ Day is the same, being that Halloween celebrations have a strong commercial character. However, this holiday is becoming more and more popular with children, and they spend time creatively creating costumes and decorations for it.
“Although we usually perceive the period of All Souls’ Day as a period of contemplation, stopping and remembering our ancestors, today’s children like to celebrate Halloween, which is essentially the same holiday, only significantly different. However, I assume that some seniors from the ranks of regular visitors to the center also take part in the creative workshop of Halloween decorations,” councilor Petr Lachnit (ANO) invites to the workshop.
