Football, National top league | Shock loss for Brøndby in the cup with four Norwegians in the team
The home team plays on a daily basis at level three in Danish football, but it didn’t look like that from Aarhus Fremad ravaged by a Brøndby team that had Sigurd Rosted, Henrik Heggheim and Sebastian Sebulonsen in its back four.
– It was a terrible feeling. I think this is the worst experience of my career. It was embarrassing and bad, said midfielder Mathias Greve to DR.
– Pretty much everything went wrong. We didn’t show up from the start and that’s simply too bad, he added.
A mistake by Sebulonsen paved the way for the first goal, which was scored as an own goal by keeper Thomas Mikkelsen. Julius Fechtenburg doubled the lead after just over half an hour.
Changed fire before the break
In the 38th minute, Brøndby coach Niels Frederiksen reacted by replacing four men, including Sebulonsen and Heggheim. Ohi was one of those who came in, but it didn’t help much. Just before the break, Søren Andreasen made it 3-0.
Ohi came to several chances after the break, one of them by the giant, but it was the hosts as scored by Mathias Kubel. Thus, the humiliation was complete for the super league team.
– They were better than us on all parameters, and that is incredibly disappointing. I can’t immediately say why it turned out that way, but we can at least say that we didn’t show up today, said team captain Andreas Maxsø to DR.
Brøndby’s next match will also be played in Aarhus. The city’s super league team AGF is the opponent on Sunday.
FCK stumbled on
Brøndby was not alone in struggling in the cup on Wednesday. Arch-rivals FC Copenhagen were badly out against Hobro, but saved promotion on penalty kicks after 1-1.
Mads Freundlich gave Hobro an early lead as FCK struggled to equalise. Hàkon Haraldsson missed a penalty he took himself, and he was later sent off for filming. Davit Khocholava nodded in the equalizer which sent the game to extra time.
Hobro had chances to decide against ten FCK players, but in the penalty shootout scored on all five penalties, and a miss was fatal for Hobro.
Viborg also lost, but turned around to win 3-2 away to Ishøj after extra time.
