the essentials in brief
- To save energy, the streets in Uster ZH have been dark since last night.
- Other cities have also taken similar measures.
- But not the city of Zurich, which sees too much risk in unlit streets.
Since tonight the streets of Uster ZH remain dark at night. The lighting is switched off between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. to save energy. Pictures from Nau.ch show the newly prevailing darkness on the cantonal and municipal roads.
Similar measures are also being taken in other municipalities and cities, for example in Neuchâtel. The city of Zurich is not a fan of the idea.
The Zurich city council has decided against a corresponding energy saving measure. “For reasons of safety, technical feasibility and regulatory provisions,” the idea was not pursued further. This is explained by the electricity company of the city of Zurich at the request of Nau.ch.
However, Uster’s decision is welcomed because it helps to avoid “the impending energy shortage”. However, the situation is different in all cities, so the same measures do not have to be taken everywhere, says the EWZ.
In emergencies, the exposure is switched on
The city of Uster looks less critical. If an “unforeseen major event” occurred, the exposure would be used again. Even on public holidays and weekends, the exposure remains on all the time. However, if the shortage gets worse, the measure could be expanded.
As can be seen from the media release, the “light extinguishing” is of great benefit: Switching off the lighting “Reduces the energy consumption of the city of Uster by the needs of around 110 single-family houses.” In order to become even more efficient, the residents of the city are encouraged to switch off private lighting on a voluntary basis.
