Catching service Prague: The biggest oddities and tragedies
Probably the majority of Prague hoteliers have at some point dealt with an unpleasant situation when their guests left their hotel room literally as a firewood shed. On Monday, the employees of a hotel in Prague 3 encountered news that is truly bizarre. When the cleaning crew opened the room, at first glance it seemed that everything was in order. But when the hotel workers started cleaning, they almost jumped out of their skins. While trying to prepare the room for the arrival of the next guest, something hissed from the bed. They looked around and found that the room resembled a jungle ruled by a smaller colony of snakes. A cat was sitting on the window for a change.
Terrarium from the hotel room
The cleaning service found a total of three snakes and one cat in the room. Two fairly large reptiles were basking in the bed, another was nestled in a ball of blankets and towels on a shelf in the closet. To make matters worse, a black and white cat was checking everything from the window. The staff could not find the woman (35), who had quit that day and was supposed to move out. He therefore called the emergency number 156.
“The officers who came to the scene first informed the interception service and the worker of the environment department,” Irena Seifertová, spokeswoman for the Municipal Police of the capital city of Prague, tells Bleska. They also used social networks and family members to search for the owner, thanks to which they finally managed to contact the owner. “The thirty-five-year-old woman then moved the animals out of the hotel to settle the bill. She did not commit any illegal act,” adds the press spokesperson.
It wasn’t the first time
This is definitely not an exceptional case in Prague. Operators on line 156 of the city police receive several thousand reports every year about the movement of unusual animals in quite ordinary places. Either the policemen solve the situation themselves, or their colleagues from the interception service, which falls under the city police and has been operating for more than 22 years, usually arrive. It was founded in May 2000. It has its base in Troja, where there is a dog shelter, and annually captures from two to more than four thousand animals, mostly dogs and cats. It is no different with snakes.
They are slowly becoming a common target of capture in Prague apartments. Humans are often underestimated, in fact they are very sensitive animals that can form a strong bond with a human. They have a good memory and can remember the traumas they have experienced with people, creating the best ‘bonding’ with them since the cub. “With snakes, it is important not to make loud noises or accidentally poke something into the terrarium. That always scares the snake,” advises Věra Přbylová, who has been working as the head of a rescue station for wild and exotic animals for forty years.
According to the recommendation of Věra Přbylová, snake owners should put these reptiles around their necks once in a while, as partners. When he wants to crawl away, the breeder can put him back in the terrarium or let him crawl around the apartment. He had to be under constant supervision. However, the problem arises in the event that the breeder definitely had to release her and does not continue to care for her. In extreme cases, he can leave the apartment and then surprise the neighbors in the corridor or directly in their apartments.
On its website, the Prague municipality also describes bizarre and tragic cases related to the trapping of animals. He considers the capture of a mysterious snake, to which a group of people even called the police in 2009, to be probably the most curious report in connection with reptiles. They watched him so that he wouldn’t run away, until the moment when the officers discovered that he was made of wood.
Sad story
Probably the most tragic case of the trapping service was the intervention of two aggressive dogs that got into the children’s section of the Prague Zoo around midnight in February 2008. Thirteen sheep and goats were killed in the enclosures of the children’s zoo, five others were injured, two of whom succumbed to their injuries. The dogs, which belonged to Holešovice squatters, were caught trying to get into the giraffe enclosure.
