Prague has a new trolleybus line – from Letňany to Čakovice
After 50 years since the end of trolleybus operation in Prague, the trial operation of the trolleybus line to Čakovice began today in Letňany. For now, it will only run on weekends.
The Prague transport company started building the infrastructure for the trolleybus line in January this year. The planned route will start in Palmovce and lead through Prosek and Letňany to Čakovice. Construction in the section between Palmovka and Prosek should last less than a month.
Trolleybus line number 58 will run along the new line, which will replace bus line 140.
Prague is preparing for further electrification. Trolleybuses should run, for example, on route 119 at Václav Havel Airport or on routes 131, 134, 137, 176 and 191.
The weekend belongs to history
This weekend, people can try riding a historic trolleybus along the newly built track. Trains have timed intervals, tickets can be purchased on the DPP website, and can also be purchased on the spot. Other vehicles are also on display at the Letňany bus terminal until Sunday.
Trolleybuses entered the streets of Prague in August 1936. The first line ran from the Střešovice tram depot via Ořechovka and Hanspaulka to St. Matthew’s Church near Šárka. The last trolleybus line that ran to Strahov stopped operating exactly 50 years ago, on October 15, 1972.
