Zurich Airport with more passengers
In September, 2.32 million travelers flew through Zurich Airport, as the airport operator announced on Wednesday evening. That was around 68 percent more than in the same month last year.
However, the pre-pandemic level has not yet been reached. In the past month, around 20 percent fewer passengers traveled through Zurich Airport than in September 2019.
The number of flights last month rose by 29 percent to 20,724 take-offs and landings compared to the previous year. On average, 134 passengers were on board per flight, which was 15 percent more than in the previous year. Meanwhile, seat occupancy rose 11 percentage points to 82 percent in the month under review.
Significantly more sales in the shops
The increasing number of passengers has also had a positive effect on the sales of shops at the airport. Commercial sales shot up in September by almost 46 percent to CHF 49.1 million. The shops on the airside also increased their sales after the security check by around 57 percent. The shops in the publicly accessible area of the airport sell around 35 percent more.
On the other hand, freight, which had already been high during the crisis, did not increase any further. A total of 32,886 tonnes of freight were handled at Zurich Airport. That was 4 percent less than in the same month last year. Compared to September 2019, 10 percent less freight was handled.
