World premiere Polestar 3: Will be tough for the competitors
Polestar has in a short time established itself as a new and highly relevant car brand. Their second model, a compact family car called the 2 for short, has had considerable success.
It is fast approaching 10,000 copies sold, just here in Norway.
Polestar has had advertisements for a long time and the model selection must be increased. Well, the day is here. Because right now they are launching their first SUV, which is simply called 3.
The premiere will take place in Copenhagen and we in Broom will of course be present. Car expert Benny Christensen has traveled to Denmark and can report on some exciting news:
Here it is like before Polestar goes off the grid, in Copenhagen.
– Very competitive
– Yes, this is definitely a car that will bite in Norway. Just to get it straight: Polestar prices aggressively. The car starts at just under DKK 740,000, in today’s tax system. It will therefore be more expensive from the turn of the year. But this can be said to be very competitive for a large SUV with 4×4 and good range, says Benny.
Broom’s car expert Benny Christensen is in place when the Polestar 3 debuts.
– Polestar 2 is also favorably priced. They follow that policy up to 3. The car faces many tough competitors, but it ranks well below the German premium cars in the class. Yes, many of the new Chinese car brands will probably notice that this will be a tough competitor, Benny believes.
Just launched in Norway – costs a fraction less
No doubt: Polestar is targeting the family here!
Large family SUV
Polestar 3 is a whopping 4.9 meters long, it is 2.12 meters wide (including side mirror) while it is 1.61 meters high.
The lines are sporty, the Polestar 3 is a well-grown SUV.
The ground clearance is just over 20 centimetres, so it should work well even on bumpy roads. It has four-wheel drive as standard,
It also offers good interior space, and has a luggage compartment of 484 litres. Not very best in class, but it’s enough for most people. In addition, it has a “frunk”, i.e. front luggage compartment, of 32 litres.
While we’re on the practical side, we can also mention that it can tow a trailer of 2.2 tonnes and has a roof load of 100 kilos. In other words, takbox is certainly a viable alternative here.
Polestar 2: Down with the price – up with the range
Inside, it is minimalistic and unsurprisingly with a large screen in the middle.
Up to 516 horsepower
To begin with, the Polestar 3 comes with different powertrains: «Long Range» and «Performance». They have the same battery, of 107 kWt, net (112 kWt gross), but with different performances.
«Long range» gets 490 horsepower in maximum power and 840 Nm in torque.
«Performance» increases performance to 516 hp and 910 Nm.
The sprint from 0-100 km/h is done in 5.0 and 4.7 seconds, respectively. The top speed for both models is 210 km/h.
The newcomer gets an electric torque distributor with a double clutch on the rear axle – a further development of the torque distribution system that was first developed for the Polestar 1 hybrid car.
Disappoints and impresses – this is the Polestar 1
Polestar is targeting cars such as the BMW iX, Mercedes EQE and upcoming Volvo EX90. In addition, a number comes from China.
Good range
The Polestar 3 also gets a function that can disengage the rear engine. With this asset, the front engine provides the propulsion. This is to increase efficiency under given circumstances.
Furthermore, the car comes standard with an adaptive air suspension system which can adjust the car’s damper properties as needed and must ensure good comfort.
Both models have a good range. For «Long Range», we are talking about up to 610 kilometers, while the hotter «Performance» is given as 560 kilometers.
Stated power consumption is 20.1 – 21.1 kWt per 100 km. for «Long range». For «Performance» this increases to 21.9 – 23.1 kWt.
In other words, this will not be the most efficient car on the market.
Charging is another important point for many potential customers. The Polestar 3 must be able to be fast-charged at up to 250 kW, which is good.
The standard wheels are 21 inches, while 21 inch wheels are available as an option. The brakes are supplied by renowned Brembo.
Here it was simply 6 on the dice
3 will be a very important part of the Polestar planner for years to come.
From DKK 739,200
Polestar has opened for online ordering of the car today. Prices therefore start at DKK 739,200 for «Long Range». “Performance” costs DKK 70,000 extra. This is before VAT and any weight tax are introduced. There will be changes here before the cars can be delivered.
The car can be delivered for selected launch markets, including Norway, according to the plan in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Polestar 3 will be produced in China and the USA. In the US, it will be built side-by-side with the new Volvo EX90, which will be the same car for a long time. The cars that come to Norway and the Nordic countries must be built in China.
Polestar plans to launch a new car every year for the next three years. The goal is to increase global sales tenfold, from 29,000 cars in 2021 to 290,000 by 2025.
