Children at ZŠ Mohylová receive healthy lunches PRAGUE 13 | News
Promoting healthy nutrition in Czech schools is the goal of the Really Healthy School program. He tries to teach children healthy eating habits. As part of this education, the Mohylová Primary School in Prague 13 received a bronze certificate for the second time. In order to defend the school, it had to maintain the fulfillment of strict criteria even during the covid pandemic.
“It was a really challenging four years when we were looking for a common path with the entire team of educators, with the children, and to connect not only with meals, when a child comes to the dining room from 12 to half past 1, but also to connect with the entire school system,” said Martina Hanzalová – director Primary school Mohylová.
As part of the educational program, schools must include the topic of “food” in theoretical and practical teaching. Another important part of the project is also the selection of raw materials for the school canteen. It should be connected with regional farmers.
“Imagine the school canteen as a restaurant. It regularly orders, regularly pays, and students regularly eat in it every day. Who else should this school canteen, which is part of almost every school, buy from, than those who are its the closest ones. That is, from those regional, local, local farmers,” said Karolína Kallmünzerová – manager of the Really Healthy School program.
In addition to better quality lunches and the theory of healthy eating, the school should also educate children practically. Pupils of the Mohylová Primary School try growing plants and raising small animals right in the school yard.
“For example, we have our own greenhouse, which the children work on in the afternoon. Each class has its own flower beds where we grow herbs, we have a rabbit hutch where we keep rabbits, we have two chicken coops where we keep chickens,” said Martina Hanzalová – director of ZŠ Mohylová.
“It serves the fact that a lot of children in the housing estates have perhaps never even seen a hen and don’t know how it actually lives. Whereas, for example, I, who was born here in Stodůlky and we had a small farm, it seems completely normal to me. But there are a lot of children , which may not even know how this works,” said David Vodrážka – mayor of Prague 13.
“Schools in the countryside, which are connected to nature, have a great advantage. It’s amazing what can be done even in such a big city as Prague,” said Karolína Kallmünzerová – manager of the Really Healthy School program.
ZŠ Mohylová defended her bronze certificate for the second time. A better, i.e. silver category, but according to the headmistress of the school, due to the currently skyrocketing price, it will be a much higher grade.
