Prague has a new website. It serves for the management and development of greenery in the metropolis
Street trees are one of the key elements that improve the air and microclimate in the city. As evidenced by the hot and dry days not only this summer, healthy street trees are needed more than ever. Prague’s activities in this area are represented by the new website www.zelenvpraze.cz, which is a joint work of the capital city and the Technical Administration of Communications.
The more demanding climatic conditions we have experienced in recent years represent a much greater burden on urban greenery, which requires increased care. This is a challenge for the Technical Administration of Communications (TSK), which basically manages all tree rows along the roads in Prague, grass strips, shrubbery and perennial or annual beds.
Rows of trees along roads form a unique and irreplaceable green network connecting city parks and other green spaces. In combination with the use of rainwater, urban greenery has the potential to form a solid so-called blue-green, which fundamentally improves the infrastructure of the urban microclimate. Trees are no longer primarily just an aesthetic element, but fulfill other essential functions for large cities, which make life in them more pleasant.
Thanks to the new website, Prague and the Technical Communications Administration (TSK) can openly communicate the green message and present their activities to the people of Prague. Readers on the site www.zelenvpraze.cz they will learn about the TSK’s set goals in the area of greenery, which documents and long-term strategies of the city are based on the planning and management of greenery, and they can read answers to frequently asked questions. It is possible to follow up-to-date information about, for example, tree cutting, lawn mowing or new plantings. TSK on the website new procedures and technologies for planting new rows of trees and caring for them and existing greenery. The website visitor has the opportunity to learn more about the method of choosing suitable tree species and the development of other greenery. A list of recommended articles on the issue of trees in cities can also be found here.
The goal of TSK is to keep the website always up-to-date and to inform the people of Prague about what and why is happening in Prague in the area of greenery, what else is planned and where the efforts are headed. At the same time, all steps and procedures develop dynamically and respond to current trends. At the end of 2021, two essential documents were approved by the city management, namely the Street Tree Line Standard and the Rainwater Management Standard, which make it easier to plan and take care of street tree line systems.
