Climate neutrality 2040: Parliament collection on climate change in Austria
Climate change in Austria was the subject of an inquiry in the Carinthian state parliament today, at which President Reinhart Rohr welcomed, among others, climate protection officer Sara Schaar and Provincial Councilor Martin Gruber.
CARINTHIA. Moderator Martina Klementin leads through the program, which is based on lectures by Christian Finger from the Carinthia Climate Alliance, the Commander of the State Fire Brigade, Rudolf Robin, Bernhard Rebernig, President of the Carinthia Eco-Social Forum, and Stefan Moidl, Managing Director of the Austrian Wind Power Interest Group IGW.
Thanks for engagement
In her opening statement, State Councilor Sara Schaar thanked the Carinthian climate councilors Hans Brenner, Anna Jamritsch, Roland Heinz Peter and Franz Zlanabitnig for their commitment to the nationwide “Citizens’ Climate Council”. The inquiry taking place today was also related to a large extent to her initiative.
Climate neutrality 2040
Schaar outlined the now available climate study for Carinthia, which contains clear target achievement scenarios, recommendations and expectations for the individual sectors in Carinthia on a scientific basis: “Our goal is climate neutrality by 2040 and the way to get there requires joint decisions and perseverance in implementation. We know the biggest challenges in Carinthia, which are in the areas of traffic and buildings,” says Schaar. “Particularly in view of the current measures, one of the most important things in the short term is increasing energy efficiency, i.e. saving energy – not just in the electricity sector.”
climate agenda
Packages of measures based on the climate study are currently being developed as part of the Carinthian climate agenda – together with all members of the government, the social partners, NGOs and also under the expectations of the recommendations of the Carinthian climate councils, which will be part of a climate strategy for Carinthia .
Long-term measures
“These packages of measures should not only have a short-term effect, but also a medium- and long-term effect. We know our homework in Carinthia and have been setting the course for a climate-neutral future for years, while at the same time not forgetting to protect nature and the environment.” , so Schaar.
Climate change and energy – global and local
Under the title “Climate change and energy – global and local”, Finger addressed the overexploitation of the natural resources of our world and the consequences of this. The challenges that climate change entails for civil protection and the fire brigades in Carinthia were the subject of Robin’s presentation. Disaster management is becoming more and more the main task of the Carinthian fire brigades and the burden is constantly increasing.
eco-social market economy
Rebernig spoke about the eco-social market economy as a way out of the climate crisis. He warned: “We must now put a price on CO2 or price in the eco-social consequential costs now.” Moidl created the contribution that wind turbines can make to climate protection.
