(ANSA) – VENICE, 09 OCT – Giuseppe “Bepi” Fongher, champion of rowing, winner of numerous Historical Regattas, many of which together with Sergio “Ciaci” Tagliapietra, died last night at the age of 87. two days ago.
His career spans 34 years between his first and last victory in the Grand Canal, from 1954 to 2002; he holds the highest number of successes in the Storica, 14, in cohabitation with Strigheta and Ciaci, and 38 participations in the competition, like his brother Palmiro, the highest number of consecutive successes (8, with Ciaci). Two successes on the Caorline must be added.
First paired with his brother Palmiro, in 1965 he began the partnership with Tagliapietra, forming the legendary duo “Bepi and Ciaci”, with him at the stern, to steer the boat, and his companion to give speed together at the bow: 14 consecutive editions in the Grand Canal, with 9 victories in all.
After abandoning his competitive career, Fongher devoted himself to training gondoliers, especially women, training champions such as Gloria Rogliani and Debora Scarpa.
