Breast cancer, data from Veneto: three cases diagnosed in Venice every day
You get three breast cancers every day: an alarming fact that makes Venice the Venetian province with the highest rate. “In recent years, the age of patients has also dropped, we see more and more 25-year-olds”, warns Lisa Rigato, case manager of Villa Salus Breast Surgery where an innovative technique for nipple reconstruction was presented to women who have undergone breast removal. Breast cancers – the most common – are on the rise: according to the latest data from the Region, in 2018 942 were diagnosed in the Venetian. Of these, 734 in the Usl 3 alone where, at the beginning of the 2000s, people traveled around 600 a year. If on the one hand more screenings are carried out, on the other hand there would still be a growth in cases. “Incorrect lifestyles and the high rate of pollution affect”, continues the doctor specifying that, by the end of the year, Villa Salus will have been performed between 250 and 300 breast surgeries. Some involve the removal and reconstruction of the breast.
Breast surgery statistics
“It is a delicate operation from a psychological point of view also because, after the reconstruction, the breast may not be perfectly faithful to the previous one and the thought of a profound impairment may remain”, explains the provincial president of Lilt (Italian League for the fight against cancer) Carlo Pianon who, together with the management of Villa Salus, brought to the structure an innovative reconstruction technique (Xtrude) with dermopigmentation of the mammary areola and nipple. “In Veneto it is only done here”he adds. Before removal, a cast is taken that allows the reproduction in 3D, through silicones, of the areola and the nipple which are then tattooed, to make them identical to the originals, and “glued” to the reconstructed breast. “The reconstruction will be done free of charge,” adds the dermopigmentist Monica Lisa Benetton. A different intervention with dermopigmentation is carried out free of charge, from April, also to the Angel.
