It is gradually back to school time for the 37,000 students and some 3,700 staff at Paul-Sabatier University in Toulouse, which is part of the world’s Top 300 according to the latest Shanghai ranking. A return to school which is part of the hope of a year without Covid, or at least without the pangs of 100% distance learning courses, had not suffered the students.
A sea serpent as old as the LGV
Among the novelties of the new school year, figurine the creation of a faculty of health. Quite technocratic and purely administrative on paper, this reform is nevertheless the completion of a sea serpent even older than the arrival of the high-speed train in Toulouse. “It’s been decades that the deans will bring this project on the table,” explains Jean-Marc Broto, president of Paul-Sabatier.
The four faculties merged
This Faculty of Health effective since 1uh January 2022 and which is experiencing its first real start in September 2022, is a unique entity born from the merger of the four existing faculties in the Pink City, namely the two medical faculties of Purpan and Rangueil – “the two faculties had been separated for 50 years, it was an anomaly”, specifies Jean-Marc Broto – pharmacy and dentistry (the specialty of teeth). It brings together studies in medicine, dental surgery, pharmaceutical sciences, midwifery, radio manipulators, speech therapy and paramedical training. “This is a first in France,” says Sébastien Boyer, administrative director of this brand new Faculty of Health.
What this Faculty of Health weighs
This faculty, whose temporary administrative headquarters is located at 133, route de Narbonne, near the Lycée Bellevue, is now grouped more than 13,000 students, 560 teachers, 20 research laboratories and represent 80,000 m2 local. For a budget of around 13 million euros.
“The objective is to bring together the vital forces and to be attractive at regional and national level. The students must acquire a common culture and the procedures must be harmonized. Before, everyone worked in their own corner, it took political courage to all the faculties to take the plunge, the statutes of the new Faculty of Health having been voted unanimously. We still have many challenges to meet”.
A future campus in Rangueil or Langlade
First of the challenges: finding a site for this future campus, which will eventually accommodate more than 16,000 students, i.e. nearly half of Paul-Sabatier’s workforce… It is also a huge real estate project that will see the light of day in the coming years. Two sites have been pre-selected: Rangueil and Langlade.
The Faculty of Health recently brought to the baptismal font has four divisions: training, finance and human resources, digital and heritage.
It is therefore an old project that has just seen the light of day. Project which was not dictated by the lessons of the health crisis on the workforce, training or internal organizations, advances the university community. “But the institution is active, it is evolving. Because the doctors, the patients and the needs have changed”, agrees the president of Paul-Sabatier.
Developer of the “Faculty of health of tomorrow”
On March 31, 2022, Philippe Pomarspecialist in oral medicine and honorary dean of the former faculty of dental surgery of Toulouse, had been elected dean of the Faculty of health of Toulouse.
“We want to develop the “Faculty of health of tomorrow”: adaptive, agile, intelligent and flexible which is a place of innovation and exchanges at the service of students and for the greatest benefit of patients. We also had to think about the implementation of a new organizational, coordinated and transversal approach for training, research and care as well as the evolution of our reception capacities”.
The Faculty of Health of Toulouse was a major step of the future University Center for Health Education and Research (CUERS), which “aims to articulate the major scientific strengths of the Toulouse site in biology and health, but also in engineering and hard sciences as well as in human and social sciences in the service of “living in good health”, completed the university.
