Toulouse: residents are fed up with the Roma camp
Roma families moved into an abandoned farm a year ago in the Ginestous district. Their camp irritates the inhabitants of the district.
“We wonder if it wouldn’t be better to demolish it today.” Gérard Gervais, the president of the Ginestous-Sesquières district committee points to one of the old farms, nestled in the middle of the fields. For a year, the surroundings of the building have been illegally occupied by Roma families. “In the heart of the Grand Parc Garonne, north of Toulouse, the inhabitants are exasperated by the illegal occupation”, says Gérard Gervais. He points to repeated incivilities “which affect the tranquility and safety of the neighborhood”. “The occupants got into the habit of gathering noisily, burning various materials at all hours of the day and night, depositing garbage everywhere around their camp, and using the public road as toilets…” , detail the local resident before adding that “inappropriate properties and attempts to enter private properties have become recurrent”.
Residents of the neighborhood hoped that the eviction order of the Toulouse judicial court, issued on January 11, 2022, would leave the Roma families. Nearly nine months later, there is nothing. The camp would expand according to local residents. “Residents and walkers using the banks of the Garonne have had enough,” says Gérard Gervais.
The president of the Ginestous-Sesquières district committee believes that this “umpteenth camp” further damages the image of a rapidly changing district. restaurant Les Jardins de l’Olympe. The neighborhood attracts new residents every year in new residences who once again suffer the inconvenience of illegal occupations of properties left empty by the town hall. The inhabitants wish that the Roma families be rehoused in “dignified conditions”.
