Palazzo Pitti Florence becomes 3D with the Gallerie-Unifi project
(ANSA) – FLORENCE, 03 OCT – After a year and a half of work, the 3D relief of Palazzo Pitti in Florence was completed, reproduced in high definition in every detail: from the exterior, to the internal architectural structures up to the works to expose. The project stems from the collaboration between the Uffizi Galleries and the civil and environmental engineering department of the University of Florence.
It is the first time, explains the museum in a note, that such a vast and articulated ancient complex has been fully reproduced in 3D. With the digital reconstruction of Palazzo Pitti it is also possible to see the disappeared ‘Snail Staircase’ built in the sixteenth century by Bartolomeo Ammannati, of which traces were lost after the demolition occurred centuries ago. The project was presented during the study day ‘Palazzo Pitti and its digital twin: the great historic buildings in the era of technological transition’. For the director of the Uffizi Galleries Eike Schmidt, “the Uffizi are once again at the forefront of technological development: the digital twin, faithful down to the millimeter, of Palazzo Pitti has not only enormous value as a documentation of the status of the Royal Palace, but also offers also data for knowledge and historical research. But it does not only look at the past and present, but also at the future: it is a very important tool for the planning of maintenance and restorations “. The associate professor of topography and cartography of the University of Florence Grazia Tucci explained that “the 3d model, which derives from the survey with geomatic methodologies, must be a useful tool for the knowledge, conservation and management of the building but for this to happen it is essential to create a management model for archiving, storing and updating survey data “.
