City of Salzburg – City Senate: Discussion about asphalting a cycle path as an alternative to the Alpine road
ÖVP “on club”, wants to see the negative opinion of the LUA – closet new boss for U-Berg Bahn
It had previously been unanimously approved by the building committee, but caused discussions in the city senate on Monday, October 3, 2022: As an alternative to the Alpenstraße, the city of Salzburg wants to build a cycle path via Frohnburgweg and Otto-Holzbauer-Straße to Kreuzhofweg. This would relieve the accident-prone route from Mc Donalds to the shopping arena, where cyclists currently have to use the bus lane on the Alpenstraße.
Will be built on canal route
ÖVP club chairman Christoph Fuchs questioned the fact that the new cycle path, around 200 meters long and three meters wide, should not be asphalted at a maximum total cost of 165,000 euros. Fuchs: “It’s being built on a canal route. I want to see the negative opinion of the state environmental prosecutor. Because if we can no longer pave a canal, then we can pack up.” The ÖVP therefore went “on club”, the official report will be dealt with again in the next Senate in 14 days.
The head of the Roads and Bridges Office, Michael Handl, pointed out that these are nature and environmental protection requirements that must be complied with, which require a water-permeable surface, since parts of the planned cycle path are being built in the landscape conservation area. This is not a problem for winter service.
Reserve withdrawal for mail & fuel
All other seven items on the agenda were passed unanimously. These include EUR 530,311 net for the city administration’s IT upgrade to Office 2021, the withdrawal of EUR 290,000 from reserves for postal services (contact tracing, federal presidential election) and EUR 300,000 for fuel and EUR 150,000 for merchandise. The Salzburg civil protection association will receive a subsidy of 50,000 euros for 2022, and the state police headquarters will receive support of 10,000 euros for their 10-year celebration with 400 employees.
New boss for the subway
In the subsequent non-public meeting, construction director Alexander Wardrobe was appointed as the new managing director of Untersbergbahn GmbH. The contract for the part-time job runs for five years from January 1, 2023. The head of the Untersbergbahn since 1988, the former head of the social department, Winfried Wagner, is also retiring in this position at the end of the year.
