Portugal does not recognize Russian annexation of 4 Ukrainian regions, warns MNE
“Portugal does not recognize nor will it recognize annexes of illegally occupied and territory totally in solidarity with Ukraine”, says the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Cravinho, in a statement released today through the social network Twitter.
According to the minister, the announcement today of the annexation of parts of Ukrainian territory, advanced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, demonstrates an “absolute contempt for international law”.
In a statement released, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs adds that the annexation also constitutes “gross violation of the “principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations”.
Therefore, we reiterate, “the Portuguese Government considers this annexation illegal and void” and “does not recognize, and will never recognize, any political or legal effects”.
Portugal “maintains its support for Ukraine, its sovereignty and territoriality within internationally recognized borders, as well as the right of legitimate defense in the face of ongoing aggression”, concludes the ministry.

By becoming Russian citizens, the inhabitants of the four regions will be able to be mobilized to fight as Ukrainian troops.
Ukraine and almost all the international have already announced that they will not join an international annexation.
