Toulouse inaugurates a latest generation secure bicycle parking, Marengo metro
How to fight against the scourge of bicycle theft which is increasing in the city? Toulouse to prepare on Wednesday afternoon a secure bicycle parking, at the Marengo metro exit, at the foot of the Mediatheque. This glazed blue container offers 24 bicycle spaces and three individual garages for cargo bikes at the rate of four euros per month. Operation is simple using a phone and an app. There are also free electric charging stations next door, six for bicycles and eight for scooters.
The objective is clear in Toulouse, to continue develop the use of bicycles. But also fight against theft which increases, recognizes the mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc. “They are on the rise because cycling is on the rise. And what we want is to counteract all that. Through the experiment we are starting today, we will also look at how to go further .”
More and more expensive and therefore more sought-after bikes
Gentle program led by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology and thought by Alice Lounardon. “People now buy expensive bikes that they don’t want to leave on the street. The existing car parks today are either unsecured or underground. So we allow them to test. If it works, the city of Toulouse will be able to install it in other metro stations.”
The experiment should last six months, in Toulouse and in Milan, Italy. This latest generation bicycle garage is worth 120,000 euros. But it is currently free for municipalities, as it is still in the test phase.
