Bicycle campaign against nuclear weapons on October 2 in Brussels
The Belgian Coalition against Nuclear Weapons organizes a bicycle campaign against nuclear weapons for the second year in a row. This year, on Sunday 2 October, activists will travel to Brussels to do a route of about 10 km with the message: “Down the nuclear weapons from Belgium!”
As the capital of the European Union, Brussels has several international institutions. It is also home to NATO headquarters Evere. This makes our capital the perfect base for a nuclear strike. With the Russian nuclear threats being played out on September 21, this scenario becomes more likely. It is more than clear that nuclear deterrence does not work. Countries therefore request urgent work on the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPW) so that no one can threaten mass destruction.
During the route through the city, stops are made at other embassies of the US, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Parliament and the European Commission. They are all political institutions that need to be awakened to work on nuclear disarmament. It is urgently time to break the status quo. Now more than ever!
On September 21, 144 municipalities and cities in Belgium flew the peace flag in the name of nuclear disarmament. They ordered the Belgian government to remove the nuclear bombs from Kleine-Brogel and to sign the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Among them were cities such as Ghent, Leuven and Bruges, but the municipality of Peer, where the nuclear bombs are stationed, also signed up. Our capital has not yet signed this appeal. The action in Brussels is therefore a great opportunity to invite our capital to speak out in favor of nuclear disarmament and to support the TPNW.
At the end, the cyclists’ activists arrive in the Cinquantenaire Park for a large photo opportunity and participants can leave messages for the Brussels city council.
