the essentials in brief
- Epilepsies have many faces – they are therefore not always easy to recognize, according to a statement from the league on Wednesday.
Because: “Epilepsy diagnoses are often a challenge, and incorrect treatment is common.”
Isabelle Beuchat from the University Hospital in Lausanne (CHUV) is researching well-known blood tests that are considered indicators of a survived epileptic seizure. Pia De Stefan from the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG) examines comatose, unsedated patients who have recovered from cardiac arrest. These can have epileptic seizures that go undetected.
The interdisciplinary Lausanne project “can reduce misdiagnoses and help identify more helpful biomarkers that can then also be used in clinical routine,” praises the Zurich-based Epilepsy League. A success of the Geneva project could “significantly improve the prospects of seriously ill patients on recovery”.
The awards will be presented at a conference in Basel on September 30th.
